Shelley Hamilton Wins Artist of the Year at the African Nova Scotian Music Awards
The African Nova Sco tian Music Association awarded Shelley Hamilton the “Artist of the Year” award on Saturday January 10th 2009. The packed event in the Schooner Room honoured and provided a stage for the community’s fresh talent and familiar faces with a vibrant evening of celebration. Shelley was recognized for her work in her one-woman play "A New Hope" and also for her music contributions over the years, most recently with her CD "Connected" which includes music used in the play.

And here are more reviews!...

The play my Ms. Shelley Hamilton "A NEW HOPE" gives a new hope in the essence of power to overcome against all adversity. The tremendous strength of our ancestors stood the test of time and this sensational dramatic rendition captures this sweet truth wonderfully. BRAVO ....ENCORE!!!

It was a delight to see… ‘A New Hope’…a powerful example of educational theatre… the production was powerful and moving… the show brought me to a deeper understanding of the present and the work that must be done, that we must do.

I cannot think of a better way to convey this history to people, especially children.  I think it would be a wonderful, in fact a necessary idea to teach this not only as Black history, but Canadian history to all Canadians... "A New Hope" is most definitely a must see!...

A New Hope
Many of you will know, 2008 marks the 225th anniversary of the arrival of the Black Loyalists in Nova Scotia and their creation of the first large free Black Community in the world outside Africa. This is an anniversary of truly global significance, and I was honoured to be asked to come back home on behalf of the Amistad Freedom Society and the Black Loyalist Heritage Foundation to create a show about those first Black Loyalist. It is a one woman show I have created in collaboration with Stan Christie called "A New Hope”. There were five performances, the final one being in Shelburne.

I will also performed with Joe Sealy Thursday, July 24th at Neptune Theatre in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Africville Genealogical Society. I joined him in a performance of his CD "Africville Suite" and I will sang a piece from my new 3 song CD "Connected" which features songs fom the play "A New Hope".

Appearances

Hello everyone! Fall is here and it will be a busy one for me! I had a wonderful and hectic summer, highlights including a gig with my “a cappella” group, The Delightful Divas at the United Steel Workers National Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, performances with Classic Albums Live, and several shows in my home of Nova Scotia for the Black Cultural Centre’s 25th Anniversary Gala, the 25th anniversary event for Africville with the amazing Joe Sealy at Neptune Theatre. However my labour of love was my one-woman play, A New Hope (more on that later in this email). But first, let’s see what I’ll be doing in the next little bit that you can come out and see….

Plus an honourable mention for the wonderful Mark Kieswetter (musical director of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross fame!) who will be accompanying me on the piano for the aforementioned dates! This is a one night only in Halifax, and we all know what happens in Halifax…it will turn into a big ole jazz kitchen party! I have the incredible Holly Arsenault on keys fronting an amazing three piece along with Danny Parker on bass ( just returned to Halifax from a 16 year stint in Vancouver , where he was part of Michael Bubles’ band) and Dave James on drums ( a Halifax monster veteran on the skins!). The food is amazing, so if you feel like some “down-home” hospitality and loads of fun, take a plane, train or automobile and I’ll see you there!
